The idea was born a couple of years ago and has been lying quietly dormant, but meeting Norwich-born musicologist, Simon Heighes, last year, was the little boost needed to bring it back to life.
For the first time we will have “live programme notes” to present the music and its background to you in a new and innovative way. In Simon we have the ideal person to put the music into context; historically, socially, artistically and geographically. He has an intimate knowledge of Britain in the 17th/18th centuries and is guaranteed to be full of the sort of nuggets of knowledge you just don’t find in books. Our tour will head down south to Bideford, dawdle in Bath, potter to Newcastle, take an excursion to Scotland, of course call in to East Anglia, visit Oxford and certainly go to the capital at some point. As we travel we will play the music arising from the area and Simon will keep you informed and entertained with tales of the main movers and shakers, the honey-pots to which musicians, artists and philosophers of the time were drawn, the social scene of the day and will give us all a taste of what was such a vibrant and colourful world.
We are also happy to be welcoming back our friend, the ever-popular soprano, Jayne May-Sysum, to bring alive William Hayes’s incredible “Chloe’s dream” (not for the faint hearted I am told), and a “Lover’s message” by Thomas Erskine, the mischievous Earl of Kelly. There will even be the first performance in modern times of music specially edited for the concert by Simon!
Don’t miss this one…..
